Funky Fungi VR Glasses

Often, nature and technology can be seen as being at odds with each other. Technology is man-made, cold, inherently unnatural; often invoking images of steel or plastic while nature stands there alive, edible and self replicating. Can you imagine using a vegan iPhone, or electrical cords as regenerative vines? The images are almost irreconcilable and defy you to choose: technology or nature.  Enter Angelina Aleksandrovich, one of the many artists/creators out there whose work combines the two seemingly irreconcilable elements.

Angelina Aleksandrovich’s graduation project “The Future Material” addresses our use of materials in the advancing, designing, and manufacturing of technology. More precisely, it looks at the dilemma faced by an infinitely advancing technology inside of a finite, non-renewable source for the materials used to create it? The idea behind "The Future Material" is accessing plants such as fungi to manufacture VR/AR technology. It's not quite a vegan iPhone, but a VR headset made out of mushrooms is pretty far out there, innovatively. We at little GIANT Wolf love when creators, specifically powerful women, introduce us to innovative technology that also champions environmental issues.

For those unaware of who Aleksandrovich is, she is a freelance creator and producer who specializes in immersive experiences. She founded Alex&Rovich, an independent creative and design consultancy in June 2015. Shortly after graduating with First Class Honors from the University of the Arts London in 2016, Aleksandrovich has worked with brands such as Dove and Adidas to create “brand experiences” for new advertisements. On her webpage, she simply states: “I’m interested in the inter-discipline subjects and in the fusion of science, technology, art, and fashion.”

Her first published work was “The Future Material” (2016) as previously mentioned. Aleksandrovich created a mobile VR headset grown out of fungi mycelium to demonstrate the wide range of fungi use that is underutilized. The Fungi VR headset was presented at the  2016 Chelsea College of Art & Design Graduation Show that ran from June 17 to June 25. The actual device grew live during the show and a 360-degree film was shown alongside it to demonstrate her research and the new applications for Fungi that were discovered.
